Itasca State Park Oral History Project: Interview with Marvel and Ardis Thompson


Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Marvel and Ardis Thompson both started visiting the park in the mid-1930s as children. In the 1960s Ardis worked as a cook at both Douglas Lodge and the University station and Marvel worked on National Youth Administration projects in the park. He later worked as a park employee at the campgrounds. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Cooking for 400 people; Douglas Lodge housekeeping; NYA projects in the park; CCC projects in the park; building lakeside lab; campground record keeping in the 1960s; changes in cooking over the years; opening of the park to deer hunting; loss of wildlife in the park; preservation of the forest; changes in park fees; the tearing down of Schneider's resort and the Headwaters Resort; Wegmann's store; ballgames in the park; bus service in the park.
