Titles: Extracts from Henry H. Sibley's letters to his wife, Sarah Jane Sibley, August 21- November 12, 1862. (Supplied title)
Description: This collection of letters written by Henry H. Sibley to his wife, Sarah Jane Steele Sibley, provides a detailed account of the events of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 (called the Sioux Uprising by Sibley and other contemporary whites). The dates of the letters coincide with the Battles of New Ulm, Fort Ridgley, Birch Coulee and Wood Lake. The letters collected here are not originals, but copies made by Sibley circa 1862. In 1893, R.I. Holcombe compared the copied extracts with the originals and restored Sibley's omissions, included here as notes.
