I have recently learned that this photo was taken in 1883 when Elisabeth Ayer was age 80. It was taken on the return trip after visiting her brother Jonathan Hastings Taylor and his family in Illinois, a trip which was described in one of the letters of the Elizabeth Ayer archive at Minnesota Historical Society. Elisabeth shared a similar photo (a different image, same sitting, not a tintype) with a number of her nieces and nephews at some time after this. I am researching this woman and very much solicit information regarding Elisabeth (as she spelled her name) or Elizabeth Taylor Ayer, her husband Frederic (as the family spelled his name) or Frederic Ayer and his family, and their extended families.
