Description: This document, dated June 26, 1838, allows Henry Sibley to trade with the Mdewakanton Sioux at the St. Peters (Minnesota) River near Fort Snelling for one year. The license lists others who are allowed to trade in addition to Sibley. As the Indian Agent at Fort Snelling, Lawrence Taliaferro possessed the power to determine who could trade with Native Americans and the location(s) of their trades.
