Description: INFORMATION: Lawrence Brown was born in 1919 in Minnesota. He was working in the Twin Cities when drafted into the Army in 1942. He was assigned to a segregated ordinance ammunition company and served with his unit in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. A nearly fatal truck crash ended his time on base. He was hospitalized for more than a year for broken bones and nerve damage and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of a Staff Sergeant. Lawrence returned to Minnesota and used his GI Bill benefits to attend a Minnesota university. He married in 1956, raised three children, and worked as a tax agent. He later lived in Uganda for two years with his family and worked again in private industry upon his return to the United States. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Dealing with segregation in the Army; serving in the 604th Ordinance Company with all blacks; experience in the North Africa invasion; serving as service troops delivering supplies in Italy; prostitution and alcoholism in the Army; going through a fatal injury and how he coped with his situation; importance of education for him.
