Minnesota Artists Oral History Project: Interview with Clement B. Haupers
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: In 1981 the MHS received from the St. Paul Public Library a donation of a collection of prints by various WPA artists in Minnesota. Haupers, director of the Federal Art Project in Minnesota, 1935-1942, looked at a number of the prints and was asked for his recollections of the artists. For the most part his comments were brief. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: WPA artists of the prints, including: Stanford Fennell, Erle Loran, Wilbur W. Hausner, Bennet Swanson (some detail), John M. Socha, Mac LeSueur, George Resler, Glen Ranney, Alexander Oja, Lynn Kempman, Marvel Midtby, Bob Brown. Information about administering the FAP in Minnesota. Haupers's work organizing the state fair art show which led to his appointment as FAP director in Minnesota. Haupers's job of convincing people to support FAP in Minnesota. His problem with alcoholism. Haupers's inner drive to be an artist: "I always wanted to draw, to put down what I saw." Presses and pressmen for printing lithos for FAP. Syd Fossum's problem with the FAP - the accusation of his attempting to defraud US government - raises the question of to what extent is government involvement desirable.
