Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Mike Trewick holds certification as a Business Manager, a Superintendent of Schools and holds a Business Education minor. He taught physical education at the elementary and secondary levels along with driver's education and at the time of the interview had served as head basketball and baseball coach for 12 years. Mike was a high school principal in Garden City, Minnesota, was assistant principal and athletic director in Sartell, Minnesota for five years and worked as an activities director for 4 years. In St. Cloud, Minnesota, he served as elementary principal in a K-6 building for two years before coming to Wayzata where he first spent five years as principal at Birchview Elementary and afterwards became principal of East Middle School, where at the time of this writing, he was entering his fourth year. In addition, he coached and taught at St. Cloud State University for one year. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Mike Trewick gives some insight into his own background in public education and discusses the Wayzata elementary strings program, which was based at Birchview Elementary where Mike was formerly principal. He talks about the high quality of the program, the difficulties inherent in any school specialist program when it is necessary to pull children from class, the controversy regarding the string program and digital days, the program's parent attendance requirement and the contributions, high visibility and power of the Wayzata String Boosters. Finally, he describes a little of the work of the Fine Arts Committee, discontinuing the kindergarten level of strings and finally the drastic budget cut in the spring of 2001, which led to the elimination of the elementary string and band programs. COMMENTS ON INTERVIEW: The interview is interrupted for about fifteen minutes so that Mike can attend a meeting within the building.
