Wayzata Elementary String Program Oral History Project: Interview with Susan Urke
Part 1

Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Sue Urke received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1985. She worked for 3M in new product development until her first set of twins were born in 1993. Her involvement with Wayzata Strings started when her daughters started Kindergarten and continued until the program was discontinued after their second grade year. During this time she volunteered, assisting with group rehearsals and other Strings activities. After Wayzata Strings ended, her children continued their music education in a private Suzuki program. Additionally, her three younger children started in this program at the age of four. At the time of the interview Sue was very involved in the Suzuki strings training of all five of her children. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Susan Urke describes the involvement of her oldest two children in the Wayzata elementary string program, the many advantages and strengths of the program, including the accommodation of different learning styles found between her two daughters, and the delight of her children as they grow as musicians and have opportunities to play in group lessons, in orchestra, in mass concerts and in solo recitals. Several times during the interview she refers to the impact that the program has had upon her entire family and expresses her hope for similar opportunities in the public school for her three younger children. COMMENTS ON INTERVIEW: When Lynne Weber arrived at the Urke home on a Sunday afternoon, Sarah and Lauren each welcomed her by playing solos. Afterwards, Sarah, Lauren, Amanda and the twin boys left the house with their father, Brian, while LW and Susan participated in the interview.
