Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Elizabeth Young, the daughter of Les and Mary Anne Young, is the fourth of the family's five children, all of whom attended Redeemer Lutheran School through grade eight, then transferred and graduated from Wayzata High School. Elizabeth began studying violin at age four and was a part of the Wayzata public school string program from kindergarten through high school. In addition to music opportunities provided by the public school she studied violin privately, attended the American Suzuki Institute at Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and was a member of the family string quartet. Elizabeth began her college studies at the University of Minnesota, where she played in the general orchestra, and at the time of the interview was a nursing student at the University of Montana, where she played her violin in a band as part of the campus ministry. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Elizabeth Young describes her background as a student at Redeemer Lutheran, a parochial school, and the opportunity she and her siblings had to be a part of the Wayzata string program from kindergarten through high school. Elizabeth reflects upon the many ways the string program enhanced her education and life. Her mother, Mary Anne Young, describes the intricate schedule that her family established each year so that the children could participate fully in the Wayzata elementary string program while being absent from their home school as little as possible. This interview offers a close look at the commitment required by one parent to assure that her family had the opportunity to partake of a remarkable public school offering.
