Titles: Wayzata Elementary String Program Oral History Project: Interview with Leah Young (Supplied title)

Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Leah Young, age eighteen at the time of the interview, is the youngest of five children of Les and Mary Anne Young. Along with the other children in the family, Leah attended Redeemer Lutheran School through the eighth grade while participating in the Wayzata string program. As a preschooler she accompanied her mother to the lessons of her older siblings, and began violin at age three on her own request. Helen Loing invited Leah to participate in school lessons at age four, prior to kindergarten, since she was always present when her mother attended the beginner's class with older sister Elizabeth. As a result, Leah may have participated in the string program longer than anyone else in the district, having been a part of the program from pre-school through grade twelve. Leah participated in the Chamber Orchestra at Wayzata High School, attended the American Suzuki Institute at Stevens Point, Wisconsin several times, studied violin privately and was a member of the family string quartet. In addition to music activities, during high school Leah was an active participant in soccer, cross-country running and skiing. At the time of the interview she was attending the University of Montana, Missoula where she was majoring in Journalism. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Leah discusses her early start in strings and her music activities, within and outside of the school district, indicates the high priority that string program participation had in the Young family, and describes the importance of the early start. She indicates that very meaningful parts of the string experience for her have been the ensemble tours and the family string quartet.
