Description: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Joyce Wedell was born in Cloquet, Minnesota in 1952 and grew up in Shingobe Point and Vineland, Minnesota. She graduated from Onamia High School in 1970, and then started working at Mille Lacs for the Head Start program. Thereafter, she worked for a time on tribal electronics contracts until the early 1980s, when Joyce went to Brainerd Community College. She obtained an accounting degree, and then took a position as a bookkeeper for the Big Money Bingo operation. At the time of the interview she was employed by the State of Minnesota as the site manager for the Mille Lacs Indian Museum. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: General information regarding growing up at Shingobe Point and Vineland from the late 1950s through to the 1990s. Considerable discussion regarding daily community life at Shingobe Point and Vineland, as well as material regarding the social, educational, and business enterprises of the band in the 1970s to the 1990s. There is also a strong discussion regarding traditional life and what it means to be a traditional Ojibwe in the 1990s.
