Description: Picnic basket with dishes used by Beneta and John McHie in Minneapolis, Minnesota, circa 1950s. The basket is made of woven ash wood strips with a wooden lid attached by two hinges. It has two wood handles attached at front and back, and a matching woven wood tray rests on metal brackets inside the lid. The basket contains three stackable plastic cups, a set of five divided plastic plates and one set of six divided plates in a mesh bag. Beneta McHie, a Saint Paul-born woman from a prominent African American family, was heavily involved in the education of women and minorities and social justice issues. The McHie's often used the basket for picnics after playing tennis. See also the couple's tennis rackets, ID Number 2016.6.1,2.
