Surgical instruments and case

| Description | Civil War surgeon's kit containing twenty-one surgical instruments in a walnut case with brass fittings. The kit was used by Surgeon William H. Leonard, M.D. of the Fifth Minnesota Regiment. The instruments have steel hardware and checkered ebony handles. Contents include: two bone saws; forceps; scalpel; bone nippers; tourniquet with brass compress and red canvas strap; flexible saw blade with linked teeth and detachable handles; surgical wire; two brass and steel trapanning tools or scarificators with a detachable handle; and an envelope containing eight suture needles. |
