US Secretary of War's uniform hat

| Description | United States Secretary of War's uniform hat. It was worn by Alexander Ramsey, Secretary of War under President Rutherford B. Hayes and former Governor of Minnesota. The black brushed felt hat has a gold and silver Federal eagle design on the left side, black ostrich feathers draped over the crown, a gold bullion acorn and tassel at each end, and a gold bullion chin strap lined with cotton and suspended from General Service buttons. The hat also has one remaining white sideburn attached with cloth tape to the left side. Another sideburn is located inside hatbox 1299.F. |
