Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Born April 25, 1921 in Saint Edward, Nebraska; moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska and in 1931 moved to Madison, Nebraska; father was superintendent of schools, mother was school teacher prior to marriage; graduated from high school and Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota; served in Eighth Air Force in Europe from 1942-1945; attended law school at the University of Michigan; in 1948 went to work for a small law firm in Austin, Minnesota; joined the district bench in 1969; appointed by Governor Al Quie to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1981. He retired from the bench in 1990. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Why he chose the University of Michigan for law school; childhood interest in the law; his "Alf Landon" band as a teenager; professors who influenced him at law school; his law firm in Austin; the decision to join the district bench; cases he presided over as a trial judge; why he applied for the Supreme Court position; differences between the district and the Supreme courts; changes since 1948 in how law is practiced; importance of not delaying justice; the development of the Court of Appeals; memorable Supreme Court cases; how his work "demands consideration of philosophy, economics, sociology and human endeavor"; collegial relationships among the Supreme Court judges; influences on law schools; changes in law schools and lawyers; relationship between Supreme Court and Minnesota legislature; his stance as a "strict constructionist".
