BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Sharon Day is the founder and executive director of the Minnesota American Indian AIDS Task Force, a statewide organization providing AIDS education and support services to Native Americans of all tribal affiliations. She and other members of her family have a long history of leadership in the field of chemical health and addiction and in the American Indian and gay and lesbian communities. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Day discusses how her American Indian heritage affects her activism and leadership. She describes the familial and cultural strengths and history she is able to draw upon when facing difficult political or personal situations. She also discusses how her connections to the Indian community have grown over time, especially in the area of Native medicine. Another topic is the politicization of AIDS within the Twin Cities and her fears that people of color will continue to be overlooked and underserved, and that the benefits of a diverse society will not be realized. |
