Titles Minnesota Farm Advocate Oral History Project: Interview with Janice Daley
Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Janice Daley and her husband, John, own 70 acres of land. However they rent additional land and farm 1,000-1,200 acres, all in grain. They owned another 160 acres until a year ago, when they had two foreclosures. She was one of the original Farm Advocates and learned about the Program through earlier activities with COACT. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Janice Daley has doubts about the future of the family farm, and sees the role of the Advocate as helping clients within that context. This includes making sure they understand their rights and options, helping them face reality and helping them negotiate with financial people. Bankruptcies and foreclosures are not, she says, threats, but are sometimes facts of life. She feels that the Farm Advocate Program has had great impact, compared with other programs. Advocates are farmers working in their own neighborhoods. COACT people, on the other hand, come into a community as strangers - people tend to feel threatened by them and to think that they don't understand the real problems. The RERCs (Regional Resource Centers) failed, she believes, because of a lack of proper planning. She also believes that the Advocate Program can be improved by better training for new Advocates, improved liaison with the state legislature and by better planning and communication within the Program.
