Red River Valley Sugarbeet Industry Oral History Project: Interview with William Dosland
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: William Dosland was born November 10, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. His father was an attorney and his mother was a homemaker. He attended different colleges before graduating from Concordia College, Moorhead. He went to law school at the University of Minnesota from 1949 to 1951, served two years in the navy in the Korean War, and then finished law school, passing the bar in 1954. He immediately moved to Moorhead to enter into general legal practice with his father. He started working as the attorney for the sugar beet growers in the early 1960s and served in the Minnesota State Senate from 1958 to 1972. At the time of the interview he was retired from his work as an attorney. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: How he became involved with the board; early request to sit in on contract negotiations with the American Crystal Sugar Company; early involvement in division of revenues between the company and the grower; the incorporation of the Sugar Beet Growers Association; the value and details of building storage bins; the use of Aldrin and Dieldrin; the appropriation bill for sugar beet research; early attempts to gain enough stock to have an impact on American Crystal's board; the decision and negotiations to buy American Crystal; dealing with potential lawsuits and court actions; determining a purchase price for the company; the decision to merge the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Growers Association with American Crystal; the changing of the merged corporation to a cooperative; the pre-merger vote for approval; the advantages of being a cooperative; the role of consultants in the process; pending legal actions after the merger and how they were resolved; difficulties with a hauling company; his personal involvement in working with the sugar beet cooperative; the image of sugar beet growers.
