Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Alvaro Zamora was born in Crystal City, Texas, the son of migrant workers Amaro and Aurora Zamora. His family lived in Asherton, Texas, where Zamora received his elementary and high school education, and traveled each summer to the Red River Valley area to work in the sugarbeet fields, which Zamora joined in on starting at age 10. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for one year and received a bachelor's degree in education from Texas A&I University in Kingston, Texas. Zamora was a teacher with the summertime Migrant Education Program in Hastad, Minnesota and also taught in Weslaco and San Antonio, Texas. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Zamora talks about being a part of a migrant family, their trips to Minnesota each summer, working in the beet fields, housing for the migrant workers, water accessibility, electricity, etc. He talks about discrimination as a minority in a small-town community; social life in the migrant community, family interaction, dances, and religion. He discusses wages, taxes, and availability of credit to the migrant, and the economic affect of mechanization on the need for and work of manual laborers. He also talks about positive changes in the industry resulting from the formation of a cooperative by the sugar beet growers in the Red River Valley, such as the Migrant Council, social services, and the Minnesota Migrant Program for education.
