BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Mrs. Johnson was born December 17, 1905 two miles from Lakeview, Minnesota on a farm owned by her father. Her father, William R. Allen, was born in Dalton, Missouri on May 7, 1880, and her mother, Gladys Foree, was born in Rising Sun, Indiana in 1881. Her parents came individually to Minnesota and were married in Minneapolis. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Mrs. Johnson was the founder and organizer of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union, Local 665. Her father was active in the Farmer/Labor Party and she joined the party as early as 1924. She was the first black and woman vice-president of the Minneapolis Culinary Council. She also discusses blacks in the union movement. |
