BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Nellie Stone Johnson was born in 1905 in Lakeville, Minnesota. Her parents were farmers. She was educated in Minnesota. She is a long time activist and union leader. She owned her own seamstress shop in Minneapolis. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Childhood experiences and familial background: parents' arrival in Minnesota; parents' acquisition of the farm; trips to Minneapolis; typical day on the farm for her; the one-room school house she attended; ethnic makeup of school: mostly Irish Catholic, theirs was the only black family; work clothes and school clothes; dinnertime conversations; church involvement; crops and livestock on the farm; early political activism; involvement with the Non-Partisan League; changing responsibilities on the farm: more cows to milk, driving the hay mower, plowing; self-sufficiency on the farm; the farm house; the move to Minneapolis; organizing a union at the Athletic Club; working on political campaigns; childhood Christmas gifts; skating and skiing; college; Hubert Humphrey and 1948 mayoral campaign; the local and national climate today with regard to human rights and civil rights for African Americans; the need to improve schools; the value of combining academics and hands-on skill training; various commission work; importance of basic work ethic; favorite childhood books. |
