BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Lawrence E. McCabe was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. He was a Naval pilot during World War II and Naval reservist after the war. He worked as a brakeman for the Mesabi Railroad and also became interested in developing a Hibbing Airport. He set up the Hibbing Airport Committee in 1955 and later served on the governor's Aviation Advisory Committee. He served as Commissioner of Aeronautics under Governor Elmer L. Anderson and is currently Assistant Commissioner of Transportation. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Naval Air experiences on aircraft carriers in the Pacific. Early days of the Hibbing airport. The role of Wisconsin Central (later North Central) Airlines in the development of the Hibbing/Chisholm airport. Early navigational aids at the airport. Anecdotes about airport maintenance. Buying into Range Flying Service in Hibbing. His role in developing good small town airports. Airport funding techniques. McCabe's appointment as Commissioner of Aeronautics and some details of the job. His transition to Assistant Commissioner of Transportation. His move to West St. Paul from Hibbing.
