Top: Subject licks his plate of the last trace of food, most meals consisted of cabbage, soup, potatoes, and bread. Center: While on a restricted diet, colorful cookbooks were a favorite reading material for the subjects. Bottom: Swollen ankles were very common. Fluid in the blood, caused by the lack of protein, seeped through vessels and settled in the legs. This condition is known as edema.
