War and Remembrance

The Civil War affected all who lived through it, soldier and civilian alike. It remains one of the most pivotal moments in American history, maintaining a unique place in our cultural imagination. After the war many people published memoirs or reminiscences of their wartime experiences, and veterans organizations grew up around the country.
