War and Remembrance

The Civil War affected all who lived through it, soldier and civilian alike. It remains one of the most pivotal moments in American history, maintaining a unique place in our cultural imagination. After the war many people published memoirs or reminiscences of their wartime experiences, and veterans organizations grew up around the country. Commemoration of important events has continued from almost immediately after the war until today. Click the links below to learn more about how the war has been remembered.
