Artillery shrapnel

Fragment of an artillery projectile, probably a round shot, with finished outer and inner surfaces. It was retrieved from a battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain George W. Lawrence of the 112th Illinois Regiment. It was later painted black.

Shells were large hollow iron balls timed to explode when they reached the enemy, scattering shrapnel fragments like this.
