Mary Elizabeth Wilson was born in August of 1853 in Edinboro, Pennsylvania to Joseph Carlton Wilson, a physician, and Margaret Maleena Stone. She attended the Edinboro Normal School where she earned a Teacher's Certificate (Bachelor in the Elements) on June 9, 1871 and a State Normal Diploma at the level of Master in the Elements on June 25, 1874.
Following her education Mary Wilson moved to Minnesota, where she married Andrew Ryan McGill, a widower with three children, in 1879. Mary and Andrew had three children of their own: Wilson, born in 1884, and Thomas, born in 1889, and Andrew, born in 1895, who died at age two.
Andrew R. McGill was chosen as the Republican nominee for governor of Minnesota in 1886, and was elected to that office for one term, serving until 1889. McGill died on October 13, 1905. Mary McGill passed away in 1932. Both are buried in Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul.
