Ceremonial trowel used in laying the cornerstone of the Minnesota State Capitol

A sterling silver mason's pointing trowel used in laying the cornerstone of the Minnesota State Capitol building in 1898. The blade is bordered with lady slipper leaves and blossoms and engraved: "Presented to Alexander Ramsey, the First Governor of the Territory and Second Governor of the State of Minnesota, by his Fellow Citizens, as Testimonial of Affection and Respect. With this Trowel the Corner Stone of The New State Capitol was laid at St. Paul, Minnesota, July 27, A.D. 1898". The Gorham Manufacturing Company trademark is stamped on the back with "STERLING" and "1887". The handle is wood stained black. The border and engraving were done after the trowel was made.
