Photograph CollectionsThe Minnesota Historical Society has over 500 Sound and Visual Collections of photographs, film, and music. Many of these collections are comprised entirely of photographs or contain photographic components that can be viewed on the Photo and Art Database. A portion of these collections are highlighted here. The Finding Aids Index also highlights some photograph collections, and provides context for the images. All of the Sound and Visual Collections are cataloged in our library catalog and available to view in our Reference Library. In addition to these, there are photograph and art resources in the manuscripts and government records collections, also in the MnPALS online catalog.

Anna Oleson Heighstedt photograph collection, ca. 1870-1900. Views of Anna Oleson Heighstedt and her family. Anna married John Oleson in 1874 and together they operated a photography studio at 226-228 Washington Ave. S., Minneapolis. After John's death in 1881, Anna continued to operate the studio. In 1889 she married Andrew Heighstedt and together they operated the studio at the same address. Includes views of Anna's children, Effie, Gustave and Ever; views of their home at 1700 Elliot Avenue S., Minneapolis; and a view of Andrew Heighstedt's family.

Reid H. Ray Film Industries collection, ca. 1930-1969. Views of the work of the Reid H. Ray Film Industries Co., St. Paul, Minn. (successor to Ray-Bell Films Inc. ca. 1947-1948). Includes views of employees, film crews on location, studio filming and equipment. Many of the photoprints document work done for "Horizon North" and "Teamwork on the Mesabi," films on the iron ore industry in Minnesota. Many of the photoprints were photographed by Gordon Ray, a photographer, writer and director at the company. The collection also includes photoprints taken by Ray, possibly not related to a company project. The accompanying print materials include proposals, scripts and storyboards for various film projects, essays by Gordon Ray on film techniques and uses, and miscellaneous items relating to the company.

Hollywood Victory Caravan, 1942. Views of the Hollywood Victory Caravan's (also referred to as Stars of Victory Caravan) appearances in Minneapolis and St. Paul in May 1942. The caravan included motion picture actors and actresses and entertainers who traveled the country raising funds for the war effort. Views include the stars arrival and greeting by crowds of fans, posed photographs, and the Army Navy Relief Show in Minneapolis. Stars included Eleanor Powell, Bert Lahr, Groucho Marx, Rise Stevens, Desi Arnaz, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Joan Bennett, Joan Blondell, Claudette Colbert, Charles Boyer, Cary Grant, Pat O'Brien, Bing Crosby, Merle Oberon, Olivia de Havilland, James Cagney, and Bob Hope.

Veteransville, 1922. Views of Veteransville, a locality in White Pine Township of Aitkin County, where in 1922 disabled World War I veterans purchased 80-acre lots of farmland. Only a few families remained by the late 1920s, after finding the land mostly rocks and stumps. Views show buildings, men farming, and construction of a log building. I.338

Views of the Sibley Expedition drawn by H.F. Knieff, 1863. Henry F.J. Knieff painted several watercolor scenes of the expedition. The original paintings are believed to have been destroyed when the Minnesota State Capitol burned in 1881. Cartes-de-visite copies of these paintings were made, many by Benjamin F. Upton and Whitney's Gallery, both of St. Paul, Minn. I.368
