Description BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Allan Spear grew up in Michigan City, Indiana. After receiving his PhD in 1964 from Yale University, he came to the University of Minnesota History Department to teach and became elected to the State Senate. He has remained in Minnesota since that time. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Spear tells of his coming out, spanning the years of 1972-1974 and culminating with a front page story in the Minneapolis Star in 1974. He talks of his personal politics and his relationship with Jack Baker and some of Baker's seemingly radical ideas. Spear credits Elaine Noble, Howard Brown and Steve Endean with being his inspiration for proclaiming his sexuality while in public office. Spear also talks about the early newspapers of the gay community.
